Profile of a Maturing Church: Manifesting Unity – Pastor David Schroeder
In order for the Church to be blessed and function well, God has provided spiritual gifts, ministries and manifestations. He distributes these as He chooses and expects us to use them responsibly to build up the Church. The variety of pneumatika (spiritual things) is intended to give the church vitality, not division. Notice:

The variety of spiritual activities; 12:4-10; The interdependence of the members; 12:11-25; The admonitions regarding speaking ministries; 14:1-9; The plea for maturity, edification, & discipline; 14:20-40

Important notice about membership at Washington Alliance Church: the pastors have decided that members may no longer eat meat that has been sacrificed to idols. If that offends you, well, we are sorry; the church has to take a stand on some of these pressing social issues 😊.
Chapters 8-10 of First Corinthians deal with the Christian’s relationship to the social customs and ethical practices of our multi-cultural environment. Questions which face us today include internet use, romance and dating, movies, clubs and bars, food and beverages, language, fashion, nationalism, use of finances and many others.  Even though eating meat that had been sacrificed to idols is not a hot topic today, the principles Paul gave may apply to our questions today.

A Spiritual Problem: The Christian and the Questionable; 8:1-13; A Sacrificed Privilege: The Cross and the Questionable; 9:1-2, 13-15, 19-21; A Sacred Principle: Convictions and the Questionable; 10: 19-31

Profile of a Maturing Church: Bodies Matter – Pastor David Schroeder

"Tomorrow is overrated" -- that's a commercial slogan for an alcoholic brand on TV these days. It reflects the contemporary mood of nihilism that results in abuse of the human body. Sensual indulgence, suicide, gluttony, extreme sports, and chemical addictions are various expressions of disregard of the body and the sacredness of life. Both the individual human body and the body of Christ are damaged by such carelessness. Notice these principles in our text chapters:

Sexual immorality is an offense against:

    God (6:9-10), One's self (6:15-20), and The church (5:6-8)

A mature church knows:Sin can destroy the church (5:3-5) How to handle conflicts  (6:1-8) Our bodies are made for the Lord (6:12-14)

    1 Corinthians 1:18 - 2:16

If you are seeking to build your life around the best and the brightest of human thought, think again,

For the wisdom of this world is foolishness before God.

1 Cor. 3:19. However, the gospel is not highly respected among people of the world because:
    1. The gospel consists of offensive facts 1:18-25
    1. The gospel attracts ordinary people 1:26-31
    1. The gospel demands a simple presentation 2:1-5
    1. The gospel reveals a "secret" plan 2:6-10
    1. The gospel requires spiritual perception 2:11-16

Profile of a Maturing Church: Background to Corinthians – Pastor David Schroeder

Though apparently he never married, the Apostle Paul was father of a problem "child," the church at Corinth. Young, energetic, and gifted -- this church needed the same kind of guidance so many churches need today. During the next several months, as God may lead, we will grow in maturity by learning how God guided the adolescent church at Corinth through the ministry of the Holy Spirit and the Apostle Paul. The issues came from:

Paul may not have known about the TV gameshow Truth or Consequences, but that's what he "played" in writing about Resurrection.

                TRUTH                                   CONSEQUENCE

    1. Believe the gospel You are saved, 1-2

    1. Jesus arose; appeared to 515 Eyewitnesses, 3-8

    1. If no resurrection Christ is not alive, 13

    1. If Christ has not been raised Our preaching is vain, 14

    1. If Christ has not been raised Your faith is vain, 14, 17

    1. If Christ has not been raised We are false witnesses, 15

    1.   For if the dead are not raised Not even Christ is raised, 16

    1.   If Christ has not been raised You are still in your sins, 17

    1.   If Christ has not been raised Those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished, 18

    1. If we have hoped in Christ in We are of all men most to

this life only,                                 be pitied, 19

BUT NOW IS CHRIST RISEN! HALLELUJAH!
